Five Essential Appliances For The Modern Home

Red Oak Graphite [kitchen]Establishing a comfortable, pleasant home environment requires selecting appropriate items that reflect personality as well as create an inviting and hospitable atmosphere for welcomed guests. Choices in style and mode of furniture for rooms should be designed around certain colour schemes and concepts intended to meld both function and fashion into a liveable space. While furnishings are critical elements to home design, selecting appliances to reflect similar personality is equally important.

Many homeowners overlook the inclusion of appliances in home design. For devices that remain in view on kitchen counters, such as coffee makers or toasters, choosing the proper item is comparable to choosing a suitable lamp for the living room.

Electric Kettles

Electric kettles are used in place of stovetop kettles for boiling water. Constructed from plastic or stainless steel, these devices use electric current to activate the heating element that warms the water. Many models are equipped with automatic timers that switch the unit off once the boiling point has been reached.

Coffee Maker

Coffee makers are available in single-cup and multi-cup varieties. Because they are often displayed on the counter, many models are aesthetically designed to be incorporated into the appearance of the kitchen.

Toaster

As with coffee makers, toasters are often displayed on the countertop. Many models are offered in stylish black, stainless steel, chrome, and sharp metallic colours.

Microwave

For the single-person or a family in constant motion, microwaves offer a great alternative
to cooking quick meals when time is limited. Whether counter-top, over-the-range, or a built-in unit, microwaves are offered in black, stainless steel and crisp white for a cleaner appearance.

Slow Cooker

The modern slow cooker is important to any household. Designed to be used unattended,
meals can be created without the worry or bother of constantly standing over a hot stove. With the use of an electrical current, slow cookers can be plugged-in, set on a timer and left alone. When the cooking time limit has been reached, some models will switch to warm mode at a lower temperature until all are ready to eat.

How to Make A Milkshake

Nothing beats a cold, creamy homemade milkshake on a hot day! Using a hand mixer to whip up a milkshake takes just minutes and is just as simple as using a blender with fewer pieces to clean up and put away after using. Here’s a recipe and some tips to help you get started making some yummy milkshakes.

Milkshake.

Ingredients for One Milkshake

  • Ice Cream
  • Milk
  • Syrup or flavorings
  • Candies, cookies or fruit

Equipment

Place three to four scoops of ice cream in a glass that your hand blender will fit into. Add roughly a third of a cup of milk and a generous amount of syrup. Begin mixing to incorporate the milk into the ice cream. Add more milk, if needed, until the milkshake reaches your desired consistency. Add in candies, cookies or fruits. Mix in thoroughly, pour into a glass and enjoy.

Tips

  • Always start with less milk and add more, a small amount at a time, so that your milkshake doesn’t get too thin.
  • If adding candies, cookies or fruits remember that they will not get broken up as finely as they would with an electric mixer. Chop them up to the desired size before adding to the ice cream mixture.
  • For a healthier milkshake use skim milk, low fat ice cream and add chopped fresh fruit for flavor.
  • Add a scoop of malt powder for a malt.
  • Make a quick, healthy breakfast with frozen yogurt, low fat milk, fresh fruit and a scoop of protein powder.

How to Deal with Stress in the Workplace

Workplace stress is something everyone deals with at one time or another. No one is immune. Even those that love their jobs have moments of malcontent in the office. Those that are dealing with stress in the workplace would do well to follow these tips:

It’s Not Your Life

At times, the hardest thing to remember is that your job is not your life, it is merely a source of income. You have far more important things outside of your office to be concerned with: your family, your health and your friends to name a few. Put it all into perspective.

Take A Break

When you feel the stress rising, take a break, even if it’s just to turn away from your computer for five minutes. If you can take a longer break, walk around the block, find a quiet place or go get a cup of tea.

Talk About It

Often times, stress builds to the point that we want to lash out at those around us. Before this happens, find a trusted co-worker who can understand your pressures and talk about it. Get rid of a bit of the aggravation by getting it off of your chest.

Find Humour

It’s hard to be in a foul mood when you’re laughing. Seek out someone whose company you enjoy and you know can make you laugh. Have a bit of a crack up and then get back to work.

Give Yourself Slack

No one is perfect. Type A personalities find that they have more stress in the workplace than others. Demanding perfection of yourself at all times is sure to lead to anger and resentment. Give yourself a bit of a break.

Positive Attitude

Develop and maintain a positive attitude and surround yourself with people in the same mindset. Negativism has a snowball effect: avoid it.

A First Look at Gears of War 3

The latest installment of Epic Games’ hit series Gears of War brings with it a handful of exciting new features for fans of the previous titles, as well as new and improved game modes to draw in players who haven’t checked out the series in the past. While there are possibly hundreds of subtle changes in the way Gears of War 3 will improve, there are 5 things that really stand out above the rest.

5. New Enemies…

The Locust hordes have added to their ranks the might of siege beasts and Kantus knights, and have upgraded classic units like Boomers and Grenadiers with new equipment to provide challenge and variety for players to overcome. On top of new Locust enemies, the mutated Lambents have increased in strength, number, and diversity as well, bringing strange, new monsters like the Lambent Stalks and Drudges to the battlefields of Gears of War 3.

4. …and New Weapons to Fight Them With

The players are not on their own against new foes, however, as Gears of War 3 will equip players with weapons like the One-Shot, a powerful heavy weapon, and the Digger Launcher, an explosives weapon that allows players to hit targets that are behind cover. New variations on original weapons have been introduced as well; Incendiary grenades allow players to set fire to large areas of the war-zone, and the Retro Lancer swaps out the chainsaw available on the Lancer in previous games for a bayonet that allows high-speed charges.

3. Dedicated Servers for Multiplayer

Gears of War 3′s multiplayer will be more stable and enjoyable than ever before, as it will now be functioning off of dedicated servers for multiplayer. This change will allow much more flexibility in finding and customizing matches, and will sort out the issues encountered by both the players and the developers in previous installments.

2. Brand New Playable Characters

With advancements in the story of the Gears of War universe come new playable characters. Among the incoming cast are Gears of War’s first four playable female characters: Anya Stroud, Bernadette Mataki, Samantha Byrne, and Queen Myrrah. Other new characters are Jace Stratton and Griffin, who is voiced by hip-hop star Ice-T.

1. Beast Mode

This is possibly the most exciting feature offered in Gears of War 3. Beast mode turns the story on its heels, and puts players into the shoes of their long-time enemy, the Locusts. In Beast mode, players take control of the Locust hordes, spending in-game currency earned by scoring effective kills to buy more powerful and fearsome units. Beast mode spins the classic “horde mode” on it’s head, changing a survival-style mode into an assault-type mode on well fortified COG encampments. Fans should not fear, though, horde mode is still very much alive and well in Gears of War 3.

Bringing Liquids on Flights – Rules and Regulations

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has established a set of guidelines for air travelers bringing liquids, aerosol sprays, and gels in their carry-on luggage. Liquids are not prohibited entirely; they are just allowed in limited amounts that could not be used for any explosive construction. The common rule for most liquids is known as the 3-1-1 rule, which applies to any amounts of liquid that do not have to be declared for inspection.

Measured Amounts

Each flight passenger is limited to liquids in 100 ml (3.4 ounce) bottles, and these bottles must fit into a single quart-sized plastic bag with a zipper top. One bag per person is the maximum number allowed. Certain types of liquids are permitted in larger amounts, though they need to be declared at the beginning of the security checkpoint.

Medical Exceptions

Travelers who require liquid medication are allowed to bring amounts larger than 100 ml. These include both prescription and over-the-counter medications, and they do not have to be packed in a quart-sized zipper bag. The TSA recommends that all medications be clearly labeled to expedite the screening process. Passengers with medical conditions are also permitted to bring larger amounts of water or other beverages as needed to take any non-liquid medications.

Child Exceptions

Mothers traveling with infants or toddlers are allowed to bring formula, juice, or breast milk in amounts over 100 ml, provided it is declared for inspection. Tasting any of these liquids is not required at any point in the security inspection, nor will mothers and their children be asked to do so. TSA officers may open containers and perform a basic test for explosives. Baby food in cans or jars is also permitted, and any child medications are also subject to the same regulations as those for adults.

Restricted Items

Along with required shoe inspections for travelers, separate gel inserts for shoes are not permitted as a carry-on item; these will need to be transported in checked baggage. Shoes with built-in gel heals are allowed once they have been screened. One noted liquid item that is not permitted in either checked or carry-on luggage is printer ink in cartridges larger than 16 ounces or approximately 473 ml. Paint is also allowed in 100 ml bottles, provided it tests as non-flammable.

Prohibited Items

The TSA’s published list of prohibited carry-on items includes many liquid and gel chemicals. These types of items have been determined to be potentially disabling as modified weapons, and these rules against them are in place for the sake of passenger safety. Prohibited liquids include bleach, spray paint, any type of fire extinguisher, and batteries with any fluid that could possibly spill.

Additional Considerations

Self-defense sprays such as pepper spray are permitted in checked baggage, as long as they do not contain more than 2% tear gas. Airbags for vehicles are also prohibited from carry-on or checked baggage. Travelers can also not carry on liquid decorative items such as snow globes, regardless of size. Flammable paint in any form is not permitted to be checked or carried on aircraft. Candles made from gel substance can be transported in checked rather than carry-on baggage.

Regardless of the types of liquids carried on board an aircraft, travelers should plan carefully when packing their carry-on luggage in order to avoid unnecessary waits or hassles. Every carry-on bag is carefully x-rayed, so it is a good idea to pack each item so that security agents will have a clear view through the x-ray machine. When packing liquids in the regulation 100 ml bottles and quart bag, it is advised to carry only what is needed for the time spent on board the plane.

Travel First Aid Kits – What to Pack

We travel for business and we travel for fun. Sometimes we are away from home for a day or two and other times we might be away for a week or more. No matter where you are going or how long you are going for, it is always a good idea to be prepared and pack a travel first aid kit.

Airport Security Check

These days, if you travel by air, you are subject to some rather strict rules on what you can and can not take on board the plane. The policy of most airlines will allow you to carry prescription medications and some small amounts of liquid in to the cabin. Sharp instruments like scissors, knives and needles must be packed and stored in your checked luggage.

Basic Items for a Travel First Aid Kit

When packing a first aid travel kit, you should anticipate possible circumstances that might occur for which you need to be prepared. Things that you should probably include in your kit include bandages, gauze, tape, antiseptic and sterile, disposable latex gloves. Don’t forget some scissors and perhaps a small knife. Finally, some common medications such as aspirin, antacid and maybe some cough drops can be helpful for minor ailments when you are far from home.

Special Needs Require Extra Planning

If you have a specific medical condition that requires you to take prescription medications or take extra care to manage that condition, include those items in your first aid kit. For instance, if you happen to be a diabetic, you might need to carry a supply of insulin and a meter to test your blood sugar level.

In Case of Emergency

Unforeseen injuries and accidents can happen at any time and in any place. If you become temporarily disabled and are unable to properly express yourself, having relevant medical information such as a list of your current prescription medications and anything that you may be allergic to, can be very important. Anyone trying to help you can use that information to provide the best care possible. If you are in a foreign country, with a language barrier, having written documentation makes it easier for a doctor or other health care professional to figure out how to treat you.

Summing Up

The key to packing a first aid kit when you travel is to include items that you can reasonably expect to need, either routinely or in an emergency situation. Avoiding accidents or injuries is not always something you can control. If you do get hurt, having a well planned and well stocked first aid kit will be most appreciated
